similar_text problem

Too much processing power with long strings comparison

I'm running a PHP script on my server which compares long strings (up to 40k each), so I'm using the similar_text command.

The problem is its just taking far too long for comparisons, sometimes up to 3 or 4 minutes for just a couple of comparisons.

I was just wondering if there are any more efficient comparison methods. I'm well aware of soundex, metaphone and levenshstein comparisons, all of which are far too innacurate.

I'm willing to consider the merits of other technology/software if it can speed up the whole process. Does MYSQL have any similarly accurate comparison functions?
