Confused by Nick's old Breadcrumbs

I'd like to use the script Nick posted here msg#1:

However, this bit confuses me:

What are these bookmarks? I thought this was where I'd put all my pages for the breadcrumbs?

The script just takes the path and makes a breadcrumbs menu out of that; that array is for the stuff you don't want in the breadcrumbs menu, I believe (haven't looked at it that carefully). Btw, yeah, it looks kinda cool.

I think that explains it, problem is my site is flat. Is there any way to do this with a flat site? It's flat, but not small and automagic breadcrumbs would be a lot easier than what I do now.
