I would like to use php for a big project versus asp.net, so far php wins, it is so convenient, however, my only concern is GUI components. asp.net has some cool widgets like datagridlayout, etc.. is there a way to for example create a table in a web page with dynamically updating data (i.e. the data refreshes, like real time stock quotes, for example) with PHP??

No, nor can you do that in asp.net without binding yourself to MSIE.

A combination of a Java applet and PHP would do it.
