Moving to PHP from ASP

Moving to PHP from ASP

I'm looking to change gears & start to do my sites in PHP rather than ASP. From what I'm reading, it sounds like the right thing to do. It also helps that I am now bringing on staff that know PHP rather than ASP...so, it's either have them convert to ASP or me to PHP.

Would someone be able to suggest easy ways of learning PHP & transitioning over? Some tutorials, guides, etc?

TIA!

Hi Web Geek,

Take a look in the library here. Lot's of good stuff. There's this thread on learning PHP.

Something tells me that a lot of people here will agree with this - but it certainly shows the tone of this forum that there aren't zillions of 'here here!' or flame-like postings in answer to this topic.

Microsoft has invested a lot in ASP promotional material, so you find more links on migrating from ASP to PHP than vice-versa. Stuff the platform producer itself publishes can be read with a grain of salt, and migration from ASP 3.0 to PHP does seem to make good sense [sitepoint.com], although migrating to dot net would probably also make sense if it were only you who were involved. It also sounds like there are more and more people out there asking the same question, since PHP has zillions of legacy scripts that will still work in PHP5, and it remains a language with a pretty low learning curve when you start out, but still allows you to go all-out 'enterprise' OO when you're ready for that kind of thing. This way of managing a web language makes lots of sense people-wise and business-wise.

For migrating from ASP to PHP, there is the free ASP2PHP [asp2php.naken.cc] which isn't flawless, but should help you along - this [linuxgazette.com] article offers advice and documents one guy's use of ASP2PHP in porting a script. If you happen to know French, one of the big resource sites is [asp-php.net...] with handy side-by-side comparisons on 'how do I ...' sorts of things.
