I forge ahead....

My server has all the latest versions of everything installed, including phpmailer 1.71. So this should be a no-brainer, right?

I downloaded a VERY nice simple mailing list script from webinsta.com. Installs easily, sets up quickly, up and running in no time.... but....

You KNEW there was a "but", right? Here's what happens. I have a choice of 3 mail servers: phpmail, sendmail, and smtp. smtp gives me fsockopen() errors no matter what I do. In trying to use either phpmail or sendmail (and after correcting the path to sendmail so it's right - that is, usr/sbin/sendmail), I get the following errors (I'm sending to the listed addys only - my own - for testing purposes):

self@domain1.com gives no errors, message received just fine
self@domain2.com gives no errors, message received just fine
self@domain3.net produces 'unrouteable mail domain "domain3.net"'
self@gmail.com produces 'unrouteable mail domain "gmail.com"'
self@yahoo.com produces 'unrouteable mail domain "yahoo.com"'

Note please that these are ALL valid, working email addresses for myself. Also please notice that the two mails I get just fine using either phpmail or sendmail are on the same "umbrella" server as they are being sent FROM. *sigh*

Anyone have any ideas?

[Edits: sheesh. Should have used preview....]

Either DNS on your server is messed up, or there is some kind of anti spam policy restricting the number of emails being sent per timespan. Do you run the server, or is there a hosting company you can contact about this?

It's a hosted server, but I'm having a "hiatus" problem with support - they're in and out on vacation as well as one of them quit to go back to school. The one guy that's there now is not real helpful (because he's new I guess....)

DNS problem, huh? Wonder how I go about getting that fixed?

And no, there's no artificial limit on using the email list functions on opt in lists like mine.

Well, finally got a "real" tech on the phone a bit ago (he's filling in for those among the missing - poor guy sounded FRAZZLED! so it was nice for him that my question was easy to answer):

They only allow list mails like I need to do to their own servers. Because of the DRECK OF THE EARTH, spammers! Like that's a surprise (weil, it was to me!, and does cause me some serious problems.)

So for right now, the list I need to mail to is fairly short, and is ONLY OPT-IN, so I'll just do it manually. But I am going to have to dink around to see what else I can do about this. Because this is NOT the only non-profit site I need a non-posting mailing list for, I have several others - ack. I really don't want to have to run a server just for this. *sigh*

Somebody (a deity, perhaps?) needs to do something horrible to those who mass-mail, spam, inundate the internet with garbage ads etc.... and the sooner the better! Makes it hard for us legit folks. As always, the minority screws the pooch for EVERYONE.

[Actually, they provide a mailing list which can be used for the sort of mail I need to do - but it IS the sort of open posting list, like yahoo groups, which isn't ANYTHING we want to run on at least this one site....]

Agreed. We'd have to find a deity that isn't linked to the one that started spam - which after all is today's version of the good old locust plague.

Glad that you at least found out what caused the problem.
