I have a new client and i found out they are on a windows (vpn) server.sigh... I dont have access to the server as of yet because i just got the job to redesign their existing website a few days ago.

Im worried because Im used to Linux servers...

What do I need to ask their host(The Canton Group) to see if im gonna be able to use PHP and mySQL on a Windows server, etc? any certain program that needs to be installed?

Any links to tutorails, tips on working with PHP on a windows platform?

All im in need of with this client is a simple secure, css styled, poll script, but in the future id like to add some php driven news areas,etc...thanks for any help.

Hi,

You can download both copies of MySQL and PHP for windows. Some say that they aren't as stable as on Linux/Apache, (but I have no experience of using them on windows, so please don't quote me on that!).

If you log in to the windows server, you should be able to install php and mysql, for IIS. Or you could go and install Apache aswell.

But apart from any install, you shouldn't have a problem with MySQL and PHP working on Windows. Another option, should you not wish to install MySQL, is to run the databases from an external mysql server (I have done this ;))

Cheers,

What would you like to know? There is plenty of information on the php site. There is a bit of difference between operating systems but not enough to worry about.

It depends what kind of access you have. Is it a shared box, ie: other virtual customers on it, if so, then the host would almost definately have to install it.

If it is a dedicated box that you admin, then you should be able to log in with a remote admin program, and install it yourself. If in doubt, double-check with the host :)

if it's a separate hosting company providing the server space, PHP and mySQL should be installed already. they're pretty much a standard anymore and you don't see many hosting companies that DON'T have them installed.
