Storing Japanese text in MySQL

Does it support double byte characters in text fields

I want to store and work with Japanese text in MySQL and php. Any tips of doing this?

Ok, looks like we have Japanese text saving in standard text and varchar fields.

The problem is mass transfer of data. The text import feature in PhpAdmin only seems to support ascii and even the ODBC transfer the same.
