I saw the line graphs on google trends and they look really smooth and clean does anyone know how google produce these images?
I did a search for some php graph scripts but they all look really pixely.
anyone know of any good free examples to make some google style graphs?

For free take a look at GD::Graph Module in perl, RChart Visual Builder Php Edition, there is a nice Chart Manual for Chart in php4, though it may be a little pixely as you suggest. For really good looking, but not free take a look at ASE's ChartDirector in lots of languages including PHP. This does lots of types of graphs, including some that look like what you're referring to.
