I first posted this in the forum section all to no reply, then it occured to me that it is more likely to be a PHP scripting matter...

Anyone give me a hand?

Has anyone got a simple solution to integrate members login to give access to a members area and a seperate forum under the one user / password combination?
ie: which forum package is easiest to use with this?

when a member is logged in they are logged in, can access all the members area features and the forum, and vice versa ...

At present I intend a login access in the top right corner of the page, this should change to 'logged in' notification when they are...

Obviously it must include standard security features of tracking members ...

Anyone done this with success...

ATM I'm experimenting with integrating vbulletin with amember ...
anyone got any thoughts on the matter?

I just completed an installation of Joomla with the CB and Simple Board add-ons. It does everything that you are asking for.

Well I've already got the site... created myself...

Not against using a CMS but how easy is it to integrate that in to my site or does it just use templates...

It uses templates, but you can "pour" it into whatever template you want to design.

The site I referred to was actually converted from a semi-static site (had some areas using a custom CMS). I ended up making changes to the menu structure. Other than that it looks identical to what was already there.
