setting up subdomain

Hi,
Could someone give me advice on how to setup my domain as having subdomain like category1.mydomain.com

Does it have to be from my hosting services?

on a hosting package you usually have to send in a request to the hosting company.

on a dedicated server (or similar) running Apache you'd add a virtualserver entry to the httpd.conf and an A Name record to the domain.
