Best blogging software?

I want to set up a few blogs (as my day to day life is so exciting it needs sharing!)
I've tried b2evolution, which was OK, a little weird in places, and seemed to attract more referrer spam than I thought was possible.
I'm currently looking at Nucleus, pMachine Free and WordPress.

Does anybody have any experience with these or other recomendations for a simple, hackable PHP blog program?

Simple? WordPress. Hackable? WordPress. I know just enough about PHP to get into trouble and I can generally get WP to do what I want. There's also a ton of plug-ins available for when I get in over my head.

Have just installed WordPress and it looks pretty good so far
