Splitting results page ¦ <previous> <next>

What is the best way or process to do this.

Count number of results if > X display next link and also divide by X to get numbeof pages.

What happens with ths next page link, does the query re-run if so that could be slow. Is there a way of splitting the returned results and navigating through them.

Any suggestions/resources appreciated.
