i built a few pages with the same content. the only difference is the title tag and a header h1 tag. Its basically done to increase visitors who search for these other similar terms. will i be in trouble for this? how does google like this?

I have a few sites that have this issue and it has not caused any problems. I did not publish similar content for SEO reasons, it just so happens that product X, Product Y, and Product Z are basically the same thing so the copy on each page is essentially identical save a few words in the copy and one work in the headline.
For example:
Widgets Metric Widgets
Both products are exactly the same except one is in metric sizes. I'd bet this site has 10 pages (5 pairs) that are almost identical. Site has ranked incredibly well for over 3 years.
