I don't see a FAQ on this, so dont flame me if
this has been asked before.

I deal in the situation where only a keyword pair makes sense.

ie blue widget, green widgets, yellow widgets

I try to achive a keyword density between 5 - 10% for each of blue, green and yellow widgets, however the single keyword widget nows have a keyword density of 30%

Im not interested in people searching for the single word widget, because it is to general, as I dont sell rought, smouth, black, white, bouncy or other types of widgets. Therefore I don't care
if i get a poor ranking on the single word widget.

But will the search engine penalize my entire page for two high of a keyword density on the word widget, thus blowing away my ranking for the two word combinations I am interested in ranking high on.

I would just try to make it sure that you had "blue widget" etc, so that if you used "" in your search the term would appear on the page, also be sure to use that when you try to collect inbound links (Anchor text), and yeah i would try to dampen down on widgets if it's 30%, i don't think you need to repeat the keywords many time (1 or 2 will do fine), you can also try optimizing 3 pages for the 3 different variations.
