I have been experimenting with new phrases and keywords for the title and description of my site.

Is there a significant difference between
"Widget by the inch. Widgets at Discount and wholesale prices" and
"Widget by the inch - Widgets at Discount and wholesale prices" Note difference is the hyphen.

Also
"Buy a great variety of widget and widgets by the inch at wholesale and discount prices from our online store"
or
"Buy widget and widgets by the inch at wholesale and a discount"
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated

As far as a space vs. a period vs. a hyphen, it doesn't make any difference. They are all treated the same.

How you group words for your page content/descriptions reall depends on what keyword combinations you are trying to hit. "Online store" as a phrase probably won't bring much value, but online combined with "widgets by the inch" might.

So you might want to do something like:

"Buy widgets by the inch online. We offer a great variety of widgets at wholesale and discount prices."
