Trying to understand more of Brett's tool

First, thank you for letting us use this tool, Brett!

I have a few questions about the results it gives.

I just analyzed one of my pages and results showed about 350 occurrences for total word count:1, 200+ for total word count:2 and about 50+ for total word count:3

Then I analyzed the competition's which has a page with PR 6 (and no content) and I got the following results:

1 word: 6 / 36 % for first word
2 words: 1 / 100%
3 words: 0

Evidently highly optimized (and third place for the searched keyword).

My question is:
1) The number of total words (1,2 and 3) is based on what?
2) If my word count is higher, how do I lower it? I tried cutting down text, but that was not effective.
3) What if the URL I type in uses METACLOAKER? Will the KDA be able to count KW in metas hidden behind an SII construct?

4) Finally, what are your suggestions to approximate my results to those of the successfull site.

Thanks!

Am i right in thinking that if a competitor has a higher keyword density than me, they will rank higher in the search engines on that particular keyword than me?

Nope not that simple!

Try to aim for a keyword density of between 4% and 9% (just my target other will be higher/lower).

There are something like 100 factors in the algo that google uses to decide your rankings, keyword density is just one of them.

Im confused, i would of thought the higher density the better? I just typed in a competitor keyword who comes #1 for that word they have 26% density for that word. i have 11% for the same word and end up on the second page of google.

What other factors need to be considered then? and is there anywhere I can read for more info on keyword density? I ve done searches but havent found much :(

thanks

Its not just the kwda

look at the backwardlinks, the textlinks, odp.

And were are the words are there in the <h> or is it in the <p> are there links with the kw in the site, is the main kw in the title?

There is a lot of factors thats matter, we saw last update or the update before that that there were very high kwd in the top sites. So i would try to get it around 10 - 12 % for the main kw

Nope not that simple!

Definitely more complicated than just keyword density. There's a limit to how far you can take that algorithm. Most of the posts on this site are about just how much more complicated it is.

Several recent threads that come to mind that you might want to check out:

And a classic thread that you should read, and then study the forums until you understand what's behind it:

I'd suggest you try other keyword density tools as well. Searching for "keyword density" on Google will bring up some other options. You may find that a comparison with your competitors shows a different pattern with other tools. I certainly found that to be the case.

I used Brett's tool exclusively until recently, but it gives a score four times greater than most other tools for my site, and also seems to inflate KWD on my competitors sites, but not always by the same amount (see [webmasterworld.com...] A manual recount was closer to the other tools as well. Until I find out how it's establishing those high figures I'm sticking to another tool.
