Targeting misspellings

What is the best way to go about this

I have seen a number of sites that have pages within the sites that specifically target misspellings of common keywords that are related to the site. In particular, one site that I know of related to Fantasy Football has a page on it with literally dozens of missepllings/typos of the term Fantasy Football. at the top of the page is a large link that says "looking for Fantasy Football?" which links to his homepage.

Has anyone heard of this strategy?

Does anyone know of the best software tools out there to help you identify the most common typos and misspellings for specific keywords?

Most search engines are pretty sensitive to such things these days and you won't get much traffic by simply misspelling keywords. However, I made good experience with a misspelling of a place that is also a commom lastname, therefore, google doesn't know whether it really is a misspelling or not - and the user was looking for a site on my topic, not the last name anyways. User happy, me happy, everything alright. :) W.
