I have several links on my pages like:

<a href="new_page.htm" title="New Page Keyword">

Do SEs look at this or penalize you or anything else?

Thanks

Hi, Publisher. The search engines will not penalize you for this and they will not help you rank better in the SEs.

The title attribute is typically used to describe the destination of the link if the anchor text does not do that. I usually look at it this way, if I have to use the title attribute on a link, then my anchor text may not be sufficient and I'll need to rewrite it.

Many make the mistake of copying their anchor text and pasting it right into the title attribute. This is not correct use and if you were to hear what a screen reader says when going over title attributes that match anchor text, you would hear an echo. ;)

Based on those who keep a close eye on things such as this, the title attribute appears to have no real benefit from an SEO standpoint. But, who cares, it's the usability features that makes it an important element to use when you absolutely have to. It not only applies to links, you can use the title attribute on just about any element.
