Tool for Keyword Research

Hi,
I have been looking for a good tool for keyword research. I have been using free resources so far like Overture Term Sugestion.
What are some of the players in the market and what are the main features to look for?

I know there are several posts about keyword research and analysis tools, but most of the time people talk about overture suggestion tool, #*$!, etc..

I am looking for a tool that can provide some or all of the features below:
- Ability to check where my site ranks on main SEs for a specific search term.
So, I enter BLUE WIDGETS, then it will show " you are 3rd on google, 5th on Yahoo, etc.."

- Ability to check what keywords are generating more traffic to my competitors.

- Ability to check what sites are generating more traffic to my competitors.

The best of all, would be a tool that would test scenarios for changes on my SEO strategy. Let's say I used to say BLUE WIDGET and want to change DISCOUNT WIDGET, then program would show me the expected trend.

Any suggestions?

Yes, there are hundreds of these tools available. Search for 'keyword ranking tool' that type of thing. I would suggest using one that is search engine friendly, they're available.

Hmmm...not sure if I'm understanding your question, but if I do, the only way to learn this information would be from your competitor's search logs. And I doubt they will share that information with you;-)

Take a look at googspy.com. On higher profile stuff, it can provide good information.

Aside from their search logs, as has been suggested, I can't imagine what you're talking about.

Hi Guys,

I am not looking for a keyword suggestions tool, I know there are many like that on th emarket.

WHat I need is a tool where I input a keyword and a domain, and it will tell where on the results that domain would show for the keyword.
Example:
blue widget
www.mysite.com

result: there are 1000 results, you're #35 on google, #23 on yahoo, #19 on msn, etc...

Have you heard about anything like that?

As far as what sites are driving traffic to a competing site, keyworddiscovery claims to have a tool that does that. Anybody has any experience with that?

Try Searching for google rankings, despide the name, it gives you results for google, yahoo and msn.

You enter a keyword and a domain, and it gives you the position within the search, page rank and other infos.

skuba - For your future reference, that's called a ranking checker or position analyzer.

Note that you should be careful about confusing rankings with traffic. They might be the same, but not necessarily so. Lots of people rank well on phrases that aren't searched much, so they don't bring in any traffic. Many posts on the forums over the years attest to this.

Also, some ranking checkers are against Google's TOS, so be careful about this as well.

I like the googleranking tool because it shows up to 1000, does anybody know if there are any tools that display more than that? I'm trying to keep an eye on my position for a few phrases I'm not even close on.

Despide the name, it gives you results for google, yahoo and msn.

I just tried it and the results are not at all accurate. The site I tried ranked very differently when I do the queries directly in the SEs and the results also reported a PR0 for the site, which has a PR5 according to my toolbar and another independent PR checker. In many cases, it said the site was not in Yahoo at all, yet a manual search finds the site in the top 5 ... so, FWIW, I'd say, not much ...

I find goya-rank.com to be helpful. It is ran by Google, Yahoo & MSN. You type in your keyword and your site addy and it gives rank results for all.
I do find that although MSN and Yahoo are usually accurate, Google is off by sometimes quite a few, so it's best to go back search Google manually.

I think there's a lot to be said for searching manually in the first place. By looking at what ranks above and below you, you can get a much better sense of the algo than by just looking at your position.
