Keyword Search to Competing Sites Ratio

What ratio identifies a good opportunity?

Having decided that one of my sites is targeting too broad of a keyword spread I am trying to decide on which niche keyword combos to focus my optimization.

There are pleanty of tools out there to give you a general idea of how many times a keyword is searched and how many other sites have that exact keyword combination.

So what ratio says "target me" to you?

100 searches a month and 50K competing sites is obviously bad.

But what about 100 searches a month and only 500 competing sites? Is this still too much competition to call it a GOOD niche to focus on?

Thanks,

I would think that still alot of competition... not sure where you would find that much competition on such a niche keyphrase

Keep in mind that the sample number I through out for "competing" sites just means the number of sites having that exact keyword combo somewhere in their pages. The majority would not serve the niche directly.

I would clearly need to identify the number of site truly targeting the niche but was hoping that some benchmark may have been set based on those two numbers. I can get those numbers in 2 clicks as opposed to a couple of hours of real research.
