Overall, the best way to build keyword lists is not through just one or two sources, but from multiple sources. There are many different sources including all of the main engines sources you have mentioned. Along with others like word tracker and the liking.
My other question to you is, are you looking for keywords for pay per click? For a mini site? For search engine optimization? These will also be deciding factors of how you go about building your list. For example, if you are looking for ppc, you will definitely need to keep the popular terms, while also finding niche, low competition keywords. If you are looking for a website and natural search engine optimization, you will want to find more popular terms, and then analyze the market to see which ones you will be able to compete with.
Post more details and I will point you in the right direction.
Thanks

I'm going for PPC. I find dozens of niche keywords and keyphrases, like "purple rocket widgets" and "polka-dot widgets," way too many to use and many just a few cents per click (as per Adwords Tool) and a few clicks per day. Is there an efficient way to research which are "low competition?" A place where you can drop a batch of phrases in and see how many websites have each?
