ok i've done some research here.. tell me if i sound like i'm on the right track...

i have 2 keywords here (both are basically for the same exact subject, just different variations of the keyword).. one being "Widget 1" other being "Widget 2", overture shows that "Widget 1" gets 2,229 typeins, "Widget 2" gets 2,646... now in google...

when i type the first keyword in (Widget 1), the first 10 results.. shows that most of these sites have a lot of inbound links to the specific document being shown.. and PR above 5 to 7

when i type in the 2nd keyword (Widget 2)... the competition looks very weak, they don't have many inbound links at ALL (a few have 0, 1, 2, 5).. and a few results have a PR of 0, and the top 3 results have PR's of 4 and 5.

the keyword "Widget 2" gets MORE typeins than "Widget 1" YET the competition is still stronger for Widget 1!

it seems as though this is a neglected keyword (Widget 2) and would be more profitable than "Widget 1" seeing as to how it has more typeins, and less competition.

I'm looking at the PR value of each page, the # of in-bound links the pages have, and their placement amongst the 10. Would it be safe to conclude that I should indeed target "Widget 2" instead of Widget 1?

I just want to be sure, as I am a beginner :)

Yes, that's exactly how it's done.

Now just do it in every search engine you can think of and see if you get simmilar results.
