Hello,

I currently am checking link popularity on altavista link:site.com

I went to google where I was told it was the same but no luck.

Can someone tell me how to check this in google or is this not possible now?

Thanks

hmm ok I guess link:site.com is right but the results are very different, almost non-existant at times.

What is a good link pop number in say altavista?

I know 1 is better than 0 :)

Just curious what is considered a decent link pop # or some numbers.

Thanks!

Linkpopularity is most impertant in google. Google operates with pagerank, a number between 0 and 10 (10 is best) calculated fron the number of links an the quality of each link (this is a very short version on PR).

A decent PR will depent on the competition your site is up against.

My advice is this.

1. Get and install the google toolbar for PR check
2. read this forum for advise on how to get many links
3. work on your links.

In regards to altavista I don't think linkpop is a big issue, but I might be wrong

Infopub,

when you do this check in Google it will only return links that have a certain PR (I think it is 4 but I might be wrong) or higher, so you won't in effect see all the sites that link to you.

hope this helps

<added> when looking for sites to link to you a good way of searching is to go to Google and search like this :

"your keyword" "submit url"
"your keyword" "add url"

this will return all the sites that are on the same topic as yours, that you can add urls to.

It is better if you can get sites on the same topic as yours.

ok I got the google toolbar installed, cool.

Here is a question. I was checking some linking sites so I could log their PR. I hit one that came up 404 (server is currently down right now) BUT a page rank showed. Is this the PR for that url?

I was not sure if I should log it or not. I was assuming the page coming up did not matter as google just plugs the url in and returns PR.

I do think link pop in lycos (inktomi whatever) plays a role and will continue to grow. It is quite clear this is the way we will determine future relevence.

Thanks gang!

Yes the PR is assigned to that URL, it could be that it is cuurently unavailable or it no longer exists, if it is the latter then you can check in the next Google update.

Lycos uses FAST data.
