.net domain sites promotion

Does anyone of you know if a .net domain is in someway penalised by search engines?

I only remember AV automatically including sites with national domains in the national version of the db, if you chose the Express submission option in AV.com.

I think that the general concensus is that, except for .edu, .gov, and .mil, all of the domain extensions get the same weight.
