I need to drastically improve my rankings in a few engines, but excite seems to be one of the biggest ones crying out for some attention. I've done all the paid submissions, but know that excite is used by a lot of my target market when searching.
What are the key factors in excites determining rank?
According to Bruce Clay's resrearch materials, I gather that Looksmart's Directory (in which I have paid to be in!) sends it's results off to Excite. Yet, I have decent rank in LookSmart, but none in Excite.
thanks again all.

This is the case with MSN as well. We have a top 10 in Looksmart for a keyword, but are buried in MSN for some reason.
To find out what works for Excite, run a search on your keyword or any word, and compare the pages.
What is the average Keyword Density?
How many links are pointing to the site?
What are the weight of these links?
What kind of internal linking do they have?
What is the size of the page?
What is typical naming structure?
Are they "doorway pages"?
Excite's top two links (now featured in a fashion similar to how Google's has been done!) are taken from the FindWhat.com directory.
Who is FindWhat, and what powers them? Seems like another GoTo (ummm - Overture!) business (yuck).
Yep, a ppc engine.... usually much cheaper than overture...
There is no super special secret to excite... It's all about good opitmization and patience... I doubt anyone here is willing to give out the density numbers they use. You need to do some research and figure out common denominators across top ranked sites.
You also need to remember that excite is very poor about updating their index. You might try linking pages that are already indexed to those that aren't to try and speed up the process.
