I am new to WebMasterWorld.com and although I find this site informative I was wondering if anyone can possible help me here. I currently work for an internet dept. and I am looking into ways to get a higher ranking on the top search engines without having to pay an enormous fee with each of them!! Is there a way anyone can guide me, or offer suggestions?? I understand that there are consultants out there that can help you, but they are also just as expensive. Any information you can give me would really be appreciated!! :)

welcome to WmW Rookie,

I don't really know where to start. If you are this new to the field I would have to say go grab yourself a drink, get comfy, and start reading all of the threads in the forum.......and don't be afraid to ask questions. Noone here started out knowing everything, so don't think any question is too stupid.

If you do not have the budget to hire someone, this is what I would recommend. This is how I got started.......just read, read, read.

Welcome to the forum

I second agerhart's comments

read, read, read...

...and make liberal use of the search facility. Most questions have been asked before and answered in depths, (you wouldn't believe the depth some have reached!)

Good Luck

If you look up in the top right corner of these pages, you should see a link for a site called "Search Engine World" Great site for information. :)

In that context it generally means to reduce something to it's most significant and simplest form possible. IOW maintain the focus of the theme.

It also has other meanings in regard to host names and domain names, but the above generally applies.

Hope that helps.
