I have just revamped one of the Google Adwords ads that we have running, as I wasn't happy with the CTR.

I am wondering what the general concensus is on:

1) The CTR from Google Adwords

2) The desired (realistic) CTR

Another thing to consider is the fact that you could be targeting the wrong crowd.

If you have a description on one add that uses the word "free", you may get a better CTR, but are they going to be quality clicks?......solid leads?

So, maybe it is better to have a smaller CTR in some cases.......hmmmmmmm

We Target 5%
use of the word FREE is always [imho] in question

Mike, you target 5%, but you also see a 5% CTR, right?

Did you have to try different options before hitting this?

I agree, but I was trying to make the point that some words will draw tons of visitors, but they will not be quality visitors.

CTR stands for "click through ratio" If the ad is shown 1000 times and you got 50 click-throughs, then your CTR was 5%. Taking this a little further you can easily calculate the cost per click as google charges around $13-$15 per 1000 impressions.

Sure
You load 20 keywords.
Some get 10% CTR some get 0%
You pull out the low CTR KWs until you reach the target CTR average. Takes a few days.

When you count click-throughs, do you only count the click-throughs that results in a buy/order og do you count all visits generated by that add??

click-throughs are ONLY click-throughs
The website must then convert to a sale.

I had to explain this to a potential client the other day.....the guy didn't know much about SEO, and wanted to know how it was going to increase his sales.

I tried to nicely explain to the gent that SEO will bring the traffic and targeted traffic, but the sales on his site depend on his website, his website design, the usability of the site, and if anyone even wants his product or service

agerhart, I am seeing an avg. 5% CTR on my adwords program. Green bar showing interest is full. Ends up being around $.30 / click which is about 30% of the price of a click on GOTO with the same KW's right now. Trick is to cut out the no-click stuff, keep the good stuff just like Mike_Mackin said.
