Add a blog to my existing domain?

I want to start a blog that's related to one of my existing sites. From an SEO perspective, should I start that blog on a new domain, or attach to my existing site?

My primary reason for starting the blog is to have an outlet for more "casual" content like photos, news, and experiences w/ industry-related products....a search engine boost would also be a good bonus here.

Which method has the potential to help my existing site more in the longrun?...putting blog on existing domain w/ internal links OR starting new domain and externally linking to my existing site (along with other sites & blogs)?

FYI, my existing site is a long-term venture for me and not a throw-away domain.

I added a blog to our site in a folder like so...

http*//www.oursite.com/blog

The SE's have really picked it up well, as oursite.com already had good popularity!
