Hi,

I have a 1 year old dot.com website - doing fairly well...

I also have the .net of the same domain name (no website - parked at the moment)

I am consdiering using the .net to help the .com ...

However, I do want to use the dot net as not only a complimentary site, but also a news , articles , information site of good solid useful content.....no duplication from the dot com site whatsover....just text links back to relevant pages etc....

Example:

DOT COM is about a specific sevice in a specific location (say city)

DOT NET is about the history, culture, news, etc about this City.

QUESTIONS:

1) Will this strategy be viewed as unethical or black hat by search engines - specifically Google?

2) Has anyone else got any experieces or tips related to this issue?

Thanks in advance ......

It's a lot easier to build one authority site than it is to build two. It's also a lot easier to maintain. There really is no need to split the two up like that and work twice as hard at promoting them. That's just my take. ;)

You can easily build an authority site with attractive content. Wait a couple of more years and if at that time you are dealing with millions of pages of content and a database, then you might want to look at splitting it up across sibling domains.

I'd also unpark the .net version and just keep it in your portfolio under wraps until such time that it is needed.

Thanks Page 1 - I appreciate your answer.....thanks....

My other take was, that mt dot com is a very useful site in a niche, but is primarily my business/point of sale....and although I have lots of good information on the site(which I have written myself)....I was concerned about taking the focus of the sale part of the site...and cluttering it uo with content (but be assured it would be very good content).....

Bottom line - I am wary of distracting the sales process....lol

Oh, you don't have to distract the sales process at all. Use the information as the foundation and leave the sales up front. Let the information bring the visitors to the site and lead them to the sale.

Basically you would be creating more entry points into the site. You can keep the two as separate entities but work with them under one domain. It's all about the architecture of the site. If they are directly related to one another, it seems as though that would be a perfect marriage to me.

Two sites may work for you but, just be prepared for the amount of work you'll need to do. Everything will be doubled, everything. ;)

Another solid informative answer, Page 1 - thank you...

Sure - I understand your point about new pages/content/info, acting as entry points...

You have made me think much more on this now.....just what I needed!
