SEP - Am I missing something?

Hi,

I know the question of SEO is as old as dinosaurs, but please read what I have to ask, I am trying to get at this at a different and legitimate angle:

I understand that website visibility whether through search engines or web-communities takes time, but I wonder if there are promotion agencies out there are legit and actually produce results?

I know that it is a lie if an agency promise to have your website "in the top 10 in all SE in a week or so" but I am talking about gaining visibility and traffic altogether.

I know of one website that combines all three popular social bookmarking website together, I checked it out on alexa and its been online for less than 6 months, yet it have pretty high traffic. Plus, it isn't every visible on SEs with related keywords.

How does a relatively new site like that manage to have a high amount of audience without SE visibility and linking that I know of? Are there services out there that promote your website to have general awareness without promising top 10 and such?

If you have a really clever idea, with technology that works well and a lot of people can use, than you only need to tell a few people about it, and they will tell a few others, and the idea spreads like wildfire.

Combining three of the most popular sites together sounds like that sort of idea. Really useful, original ideas with technology that works well and is easy to use are easy to promote, the challenge is keeping up with the bandwidth needs as the site explodes.

If your site lacks that killer functionality and originality, you'll need an entirely different approach.

Exactly!

The word of mouth, viral marketing way. I want to know if there are professional services available that do this initialization for a site? As in send the concept idea to a few key people who would then send it to another set of movers and shakers and hence spread the fire.
