We are only promoting the .com version in the search engines and have a ban on the complete site with robots.txt and META tags on the .ca version.
Since pricing in US (.com version) is different than that of the CAD (.ca version) we are directing users to the correct site based on IP. Canada has different IP pools than those assigned to US, so this is easy. We have it set so that Canadians get the .ca and everyone else gets the .com.
What I am wondering.... are there any potential problems with the search engines in doing this? Would there be any problems with Google, Yahoo or MSN in redirecting based on Country? Considering Google themselves do it, I wouldn't think so, but just want to make sure.
It sounds like you've got it handled from your descriptions, and this should all be fine with Google, to my knowledge. I would just 100% verify that the technology is working exactly as you think it is on both domains.
