Hi:

I am revising a web site. It has no keywords in any page, has not had for its history, but still has a decent ranking on some search engines. I assume this is based on content, page titles, etc. Right?

If I rename some or all of the pages, change titles, add keywords, revise the content, or move it to a different host, will any of this diminish whatever advantage the site has gained by being on the web about 8 years?

Appreciate your attention to this post, and will gladly accept any suggestions, about the message, or how to use this forum. (e.g., how do you "search" for relevant previous messages?)

Cheers,

mscomdex

Welcome to Webmaster World.

If you shuffle a pack of cards - it will never be the same again.

personally if I've had the same page names for 8 years I wouldn't change those for anything.

mscomdex, welcome to WebmasterWorld!

Messing with success involves risk, no question about it. I'd be very careful.

But there is no rule that says every change is a bad one, even in this day of very touchy algo's.

Yes, I've seen pages plummet following subtle changes. I've also seen pages skyrocket after being modified intelligently...

Maybe you should consider altering a few pages only, and seeing what happens.

If the filenames, page titles, etc., remain constant, and a bit of content gets added to the pages, and IF the content being added reinforces the ideas that each page is already ranking for, there is a good chance that the additions will be beneficial.

If the additions are ill conceived however, they will of course hurt.

Not trying to confuse the issue, just trying remove absolute fear of change. Not all change is bad. Especially if the change adds content to content-less pages (from the SE's point of view)...and if the content reinforces the ideas reflected in page titles, etc.

Hello Mscomdex,
Lets get to the point straight.
Your websites best part is 8 years online.
So:
1) Don't change the host.
2) Don't Change on to the title and contents.
3) Add meta tag <title>, <content> <keyword> and use your keywords smartly.
4) Add new contents first without removing the old one, see the responce and only after it boosts your ranking and traffic make additional changes in the existing contents.

All the best.
