Anyone ever experiment with this? I know content is important, but I'm just wondering *how* important.
That is a bad example as it is unlikely that most people will be able to get the amount of links it took to get the results you point to.
A site would need tens of thousands of links to rank purely based on link-popularity; unless of course someone can get 50 or so PR6s and 7s pointing to a site.
Content is important.
Content is always important and not only to rank well but to get good conversion (which is the ultimate goal) but also to get unsolicited backlinks.
So I guess that only you can figure out how well you can be expected to do, by analysing the SERPs for your keywords and your competitor's websites.
if you read what the dreamache says:
"how difficult it is to rank high in the serps without much content (but with a lot of good backlinks)? "
They said "good backlinks" and the example i gave is exactly that.
You're right in that most people would never be able to achieve this, but it is possible.
