Would an unrelated outbound link drastically effect my SEP in AOL, MSN

Hi,

About two days I made three changes to my site:

-1- At the bottom of my main site page( PR4 ) I added a textlink to one of my other webites, this other website is not really related. My main page is a software site, and I referred to my other site as a loyal long term customer.
-2- I also added about 20 links to my links page, most of these are reciprocal links.
-3- I made some very minor changes to the content within my main page.

Two days had passed and I have dropped from postion 8 to position 198 for some keywords. It appears that the majority of the drops have occured on my main page, oddly pages which I have't touched for ages seems to increase in position

How long does it take for changes to be seen within MSN and AOL, the reason I ask is am I seeing ramifications from something that I might have done two weeks ago, or am I viewing the impact of changes I made two days ago.

MSN and googlebot visit/spider my site daily.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oh, I forgot to mention, MSN is also showing my old page in cache, not my new one, infact the page msn is showing in cache is from about 3 wks ago.

Hey wannlearnsobad, welcome to WebmasterWorld!

I'm not clear...your post seems to be mainly focused on the drop to 198 from 8 in one SE. Was that AOL (aka Google)? Or MSN?

If the recip links are a large part of total links in now, that could be an issue. I'm guessing, and it's only guessing, that perhaps the homepage changes are more significant than you think?

Generally, we no longer make changes to homepages at the same time we make other important changes. The algos at some SE's are so touchy these days that if we do make changes to the homepage and things go south, it's helpful to know there are not other issues to have to rule out.

But I gotta say too, with lagging of links IMO becoming the norm now, and the SE's possibly lagging other things too, and the fact that all three of the big's work on different update timetables even for different measures, it all get's pretty tough to isolate individual issues. Not impossible; just tough.

Very much an opinion on my part. Not much verifiable fact in this post.

wannlearnsobad - Are you aware that MSN went totally chaotic a couple of days ago?

MSN Search SERPs Latest Changes: What's Good and What's Bad?
[webmasterworld.com...]

Never seen such garbled up nonsense, not "spammy" per say, but generally irrelavant and just bizarre. Someone pushed the wrong button over there....

...and four pages and counting of similar comments.

It could be the MSN changes happened just when you made your changes. If so, there's probably no cause and effect, unless you're the guy who flipped the switch. ;)

Anyway, if it's MSN you're talking about, you are not alone. The results are such a mess there's no point even worrying about them. It's not you.

Note that AOL is powered by Google, and in all likelihood AOL and MSN results would be fairly different these days.

Hi,

Firstly, thank you for your help. It appears as if MSN has brought me back up 103 positions for the one keyword since this morning, since I removed the link to the other non related site. Also AOL has moved me back up 53 positions for that same keyword phrase. As per my other pages on MSN yes I would have to agree, they seem to be going all over the place.. But I would definitely have to say that my home page is up across, ASK, MSN, and AOL, (Google no movement since yesterday ), and all apparently due to me removing that one darn link to a NEW, unpaged-ranked non-related site. I wonder what will happen if I remove the other two links I have at the bottom of that same page which links to related sites.

I have some other questions but I figure I am best to start some new threads for those, Anyway thank you once again for your input, and in advance for any other input you have..

wannlearnsobad - Good that you're back after the MSN rollback. Still don't have a clue what you did to your site and what's happening with you on Google. You need to formulate your question much more clearly.

Hi,

I'm not sure if I had another question, as I find this whole SEO thingie very confusing, when I make modifications to attempt better placement, I seem to go down, then all of a sudden back up. Its almost like everything I'm doing has a very delayed reaction,

MSN has duplicate entries for my pages, inotherwards I appear on page 2 and page 6 for the same keywords, with the same description, for the same url/page very strange..
