Does "seach engine bombing" still work?

Somehow I ended up on page 3 of MSN

I had a personal photo gallery that I havent updated in ages. To promote my new site I put up a link like this

<h1><a href="....">free widgets</a></h1>

Now "free widgets" is a very competitve keyword, with 2,000,000 results in MSN and over 100,000,000 is Google.

The funny thing is my main page doesn't mention "free widgets" anywhere, although they can be found in a different section. Yet I rank better in MSN than many sites that have it stampted all over them.

I think I will go ahead and put the same link on all my other photo galleries and personal sites and see what happens.

Is this behavior MSN-specific or should I see it on Yahoo and Google as well?

You will see this to a certain extent on all the engines.

The power of linking text can be very strong.
