I have just noticed that a large merchant has a number of different domains pointing to what looks like thier only site but towards different countries. Do you think this can increase ranking or is it jusimply for brand awareness?

I am thinking of doing it to my site but am scared that it might get counted as duplicating a site.

If it's a recognizable brand that someone in Japan or Brazil may actually type into a browser, like example.jp or example.com.br, then it's probably best to create a localized website to address that audience.

Not everyone in Japan or Brazil or wherever is going to appreciate visiting a website in a language they can't understand.

Pointing ccTLD's to your website will not help your rankings in any way.

Yes, but it depends on the particulars of your niche. Generally speaking, it revolves around "friendly" non-affiliated websites.
