Hi all

As many of us use WebpositionGold, it may be useful for us to share information about its stregths and weaknesses and more importantly, how to get the best out of it. From conversations with others, it appears that people use it in many ways to suit there needs. Could be an opportunity to learn from the chaps who are 'experienced'.

I'll be honest, I'm struggling with it - I'd be very grateful for any help about its most useful features and perhaps comments on the validity of the page critic/knowledge base.

Any takers on this subject?

Stavs,

Personally, I just use WPG for reporting, quick traffic views and sometimes to study competition.

For the most part I think the page critic is pretty useless and I think your better off just concentrating on decent content, good marketing copy and adequate placement and volume of keywords/phrases on each of your pages. Experience is a far better guide than the WPG page critic. That thing will drive ya nuts :)

Tell me what problems you have (with WPG that is:))& I'll try to help you out, I've been using WPG for sometime, I now only use the page critic which more often than not gets it right first time, especially if you're interested in inktomi rankings.

Forget about the page generator as they stand out like a sore thumb, just work on producing additional pages for your optimised keywords run them through the critic and bob's your uncle :).

I've always submitted by hand & considering the search engines it submits to automatically, would recommend that route as you don't want to upset them.

I've recently moved away from the reporter due to the google issues but prior to that did find it very useful, but I now use Top dog, I would go back to WPG if the reporting problems with google could be ironed out.

I'm sure I remembered reading somewhere that WPG is in negotiations with google over this, but don't hold your breath on that being resolved.

I use both the reporter and the page submitter in WPG. They both work fine for me. One big advantage, in my mind, over Top Dog (which I also use), is that WPG keeps the trend of the pages. TD only shows the most recent run and compares that to the previous run. You have to export and load into a spreadsheet to get it to keep the trend. Search engine results are just too variable for one comparison to be meaningful. If TD added a trend capability, they might become my primary reporting tool.

I don't run the reporter against Google for fear of getting banned. Getting banned from Google is among my worst nightmares (right up there with programming COBOL for eternity, and buying four floppy drives for a TRS-80 model 1 for $1000).

I haven't had any real trouble with the submitter, despite what other people say.

I highly suggest turning off the "Search for these URLs" checkbox on the URL verification tab unless that is the primary purpose of running your report. This multiplies the number of hits on the search engine significantly and makes it more likely that you'll irritate them.

I have problems with the page critic. I want to optimize my index page but not sure which engine to optimize it to. I suppose I should be looking at going for the one which will give the most traffic and the one I am most likely to succeed in.

I don't know how to get the best out of WPG, I can see the value of the research that went into it but find it a bit overwhelming.

If it was me I would go for Google, as unless your going to pay for ink you're going struggle to get anything into msn/hotbot/goto that will rank well.

Also if your looking at the ink paid program don't submit the index page it won't rank well.

Hi Tigger!

>Also if your looking at the ink paid program don't submit the index page it won't rank well. >

Why?

After the recent reindexing at Excite and Fast I noticed a strange drop: one of our site (before the reindexing) was listed in the first positions searching with

keyword1 keyword2 keyword3

With the URL

[mysite.com...]

Now that site is on the second page for the same keywords search, with the URL

[mysite.com...]

What is the difference in being listed as

[mysite.com...]

versus

[mysite.com...]

And it is strange that now this site is at the top listing with other keywords.

I didn't change anything!

Is there a correlation between Excite and Fast?

Thank you!

Angiolo

Thanks Tigger

I am under the impression that Google is more concerned with link popularity than structure - is this correct?

How can I find out more about submitting to ink? like where do I submit a paid listing?

Pass, I went through a learning curve with ink when the paid scheme first started and any paid index pages ranked but very poorly, these were switched to optimised pages and in most cases went in considerably higher other members in the forum have also found this.

As far as I know (which isn't a great deal) there is no correlation between Excite and Fast.

If you goto the inktomi forum you'll get all your answers there but sticky sent with url.

Sorry it's a bit short, but I'm late for a meeting.
