I want to find out if there are any penalties for 301 redirecting a domain from a .org by the search engines

thanks

I'm currently in the same boat, my 301 redirect is actually working out quite nicely.

the site disappeared for about 3 weeks and is now showing up again with no loss in ranking...

IMHO you just need to wait it out and make sure your redirect is correctly created.

There can be more trouble if the target domain is newly registered, or perhaps previsouly owned and mis-used. But waiting it out and just continuing with solid development will, eventually prevail. It's just that the wait may be more like months in the situation I described.

We have a client who went from the .org to a newly purchased .com that a previous owner let drop -- Yahoo and MSN came along in just a few weeks, but Google is still a problem.

Or you could 301 the .com to the .org instead.

Use the .com for offline branding. .org for online marketing.

I agree with Receptional, that's certainly the quickest and safest route. If the business owner is not concerned about the final url being a .org, you avoid all the current googlishness.

> googlishness

tedster, did you just coin that term? It's perfect. May we have your permission to use it? For non-commercial purposes only of course. ;-)
