PDF vs linking to article

Here is my dilema. I can purchase content related to my website in pdf format and host it on my website or create an external link to the article which resides on the authors website. If cost were not an issue which strategy would benefit you more from a search engine optimization viewpoint? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I would much rather (if I was paying for it) have the content remain on my site (more content, more chances for a page to rank and the ability to obtain IBL's) instead of a link to a PDF file on the authors site - where you are actually casting a vote for him and increasing his link popularity (by linking to him).
