Multiple URLs going to the same pages

Different ones indexed in different SEs

I have just realised that on quite a large site, which is well indexed in all search engines, that I have lots of pages with 3 different urls leading to them.

eg
www.example.com/directory
www.example.com/directory/
www.example.com/directory/index.html

It is not too hard to correct this since they are mostly occuring in templates, so I can just carefully trawl though them and edit.

The problem is that Google has indexed the second version, Yahoo and MSN the first, and Ask has not listed any index pages at all, though weirdly it sends a lot of traffic to non-index pages.

I am not sure which version I should go with, or if there is a way to keep them all happy?

Maybe do a 301 redirect from the various URL's to the preferred one? Decide on one version, and force everything there. Y is much better these days with 301's, and MSN seems to be pretty quick on things now. G will catch on fast, as usual.
