Is there a definitive, up-to-date book or site that gives step by step instructions for getting better search engine presence?

I know webposition gold is a program that helps out a lot but the price is steep.
The last time I used it I could have done just as well with a list of things to do on my site without bothering with the software.

The subject of "rich content" always comes up in this regard and I would like to know exactly how that applies to stores.

Linking also seems to have undergone radical changes to the point where I do not wish to exchange links anymore out of google terror.
The list of don't seems to grow day by day, while very little is said about rewards.

Thanks

Start here:
[webmasterworld.com...]

Then dive in elsewhere on this domain's forums, saving the money from any out of date book for coffee as you sit up late (it's rather addictive around here)

If you really wanna spend money, join the supporter's side of this site for even more content.

Welcome to webmasterworld

I would have thought the book "search engine optimization for dunnies would be a good place to start"

The basic concepts of SEO haven't changed much in a few years - write good content, create search engine friendly URL's, build links, keyword research, on page highlighting, etc.

What changes is the line between what you can get away with and what you can't, and this is what you need to keep up to date on.

I would strongly suggest you find a reputable source, be it a book, website or someone to talk to, learn the basics and through up a site to mess around with and test for yourself. THEN, spend time on the forums dealing with more advanced concepts.

The sad fact is that although there is a tonne of good information available on forums, it is usually buried in loose conjecture, misinformation, un-informed opinions and some plain wrong information.

In time, 90% of your SEO knowledge will come from practical experience which is built on ideas, thoughs and inspiration from sources such as this. But I wouldn't take this as a learning tool on it's own.

I practically find the book "Search Engine Optimization For Dummies" by Peter Kent is very useful guide.

Most of the people are ignorant actually what the search engines actually avoid like frames, invisible navigation systems, Java Scripts and Macromedia Flash, cluttered sites overloaded with HTML and many other things which are unrelated to the contents, but people bumped their site with those stuff rather than considering a clean and crisp good and rich contents.

I also agree that the webhostworld different reviews based on individual practical experience can be considered iteself a valuable guideline like a book.
