A client has received a quote for search engine optimisation that started with this:-

A website which is consumer friendly is highly unlikely to be search Engine friendly. The better the website is for the consumer the more the search engine has a problem with it. There are only a couple of website designers in the UK who have the training and the experience to manage both activities. The technologies are poles apart. We are not saying that your designer cannot design a good customer facing website, on the contrary, he is probably very good and has a good understanding of what makes good website design for the consumer. We on the other hand concentrate on ensuring that our clients perform well within the major search engines and leave their designers to get on with the consumer side of thing.

Just wanted your thoughts about any of that, especially the first sentence. Are they advocating ignoring the consumer?

Should also point out that this company are a) guaranteeing a top ten position and b) optimising pages on their own domain rather than the actual site.

Am advising client what not to do with a bargepole, but just wanted your views...

Twits.

They're basically selling you an advert on their own site.

IMO, a well designed consumer site is what the se are looking for, so the two go hand in hand.

Couldn't agree more!

I've always said that the most important thing is the end user. Get usability right, then get the search engines right. What's the point in having a website that everyone can find but no-one can use?!
