How important are unique urls for blog businesses

Do you use a unique url for each of your sites, or subdomains

Hi,

This isn't a technical question, but a strategic one. I am considering starting to write a couple of new sites, and am wondering about the wisdom of using subdomains vs unique urls, ie www.mysite.com vs thissite.mysite.com

I'm not sure about recently, but about a year ago i tried the subdomain thing on a site, made a terrible mess of the search results - but didn't achieve much more than that.

I'm not sure that search engines relate different subdomains to each other either, for example web hosts using somesite.freewebhost.com doesn't help out freewebhost.com with links, because they are seperate sites, however freewebhost/somesite would (although not as much as linking directly to freewebhost.com)

As i said i'm not sure of that, but it would make sense, and my very small test of subdomains didn't achieve me much (except for the fact that those subdomains are still listed in search engines even now but with no content, as they are just seen as inaccessable sites)
