Duplicate pages and search engines.

Could these similar pages downgrade my search engine rankings?

Hi

I have three almost identical pages at

www.example.com/letter.htm
and
www.example.com/politics/letter.htm
and
www.example2.com/letter.htm

They should be identical apart from the heading on the page and the recommended subject. Also, the title tags in the html are different. I did not include keywords in the keyword tags on this page like I normally do on other pages.

The above pages link to another unique page with a letter, therefore if I put no index tags on the page it probably would prevent those pages being indexed.

Are the pages at the above URL’s too similar so that they could cause my search engine ranking to be downgraded? I heard search engines do downgrade sites who submit identical pages.

Also, are the instructions on the pages easy enough for anyone to understand? Any comments on my sites are appreciated.

Your help will be appreciated
Regards Richard.

Welcome to Webmaster World, Richard.

If your worst problem is that you have duplicate content on a couple of pages you should be fine. I have some pages that are more or less identical. The only thing that happens is that one page performs much better than the others.

Hi

Thanks for your answer.

I am not sure who or what edited my website addresses in the above question because there was no link to who edited it. I could not find a domain at example.com, therefore nobody could see the examples. Do you know why they were changed?

The correct URL’s are at

www.advantagein.com/letter.htm
and
www.advantagein.com/politics/letter.htm
and
www.truechristianity.com/letter.htm

Your help is appreciated
Regards Richard.
