Moving to a subdomain

Hi everyone

I am about to change hosting and wish to move a site to a new host. Unfortuatly this host will only support sub domains so my site will be thehostsite.com/mysite rather than mysite.com

I was wondering what implications may exist as a result of doing this in terms of search engine promotion? Is this site likely to remain indexed or be frowned upon? Also is a 301 redirect appropiate here?
Google is my main concern here.

Thanks

Why would you choose a host like this? That is completely silly. If you cannot afford to spend what little some hosts charge you really shouldn't even bother.

The choice is not mine to make. The site is for a school who have no budget. I used to host this myself but now the local council has taken over the hosing and this is how they do it.
