Hi,

With total experience of more than 7 years in IT, I have about 5 years of experience working as a Professional SEO and 2.5 years in S/W Development. I have been offered a job as "SEO Manager" in USA / Canada and have been asked to quote an expected salary. I have no idea about salaries in USA / Canada.

Please help me specifying what salary would you expect if you apply for the same job / offer a job in similar profile as a employer.

Thanks & Regards

Guddu

guddu, first off congratulations on the job offer!

It's just a ballpark guess mind you, but I'd think that $60K a year would be the absolute rock bottom minimum, given your experience. More than likely it should be more than that, but you may be able to work an increase clause into your acceptance, with provision for increases after 3 months, 6 months and a year.

A lot of what amount may be needed for financial survival and sustenance can depend on what particular city or area the job location is in, if you'll be relocating, depending upon the cost of living, which varies tremendously from one place to another. For example, I live in Los Angeles, where you can expect to pay well over $2-300K for a small, quite old two bedroom home in a bad, rundown and generally crime-ridden neighborhood that's less than desirable. I live in an upscale, "safe" good and desirable neighborhood, though in an older, though quality apartment building, and apartments here rent for over $900 a month for a one-bedroom and $1200+ for a two bedroom apartment. Add that on to high utility costs and high auto insurance costs (you can barely survive in LA without a car) and it adds up to a generous monthly budget need before even starting on your actual day to day needs for living expenses.

There are, however, parts of this country where you can buy a lovely new home for under $200K in a good residential area - parts of Texas and Michigan for example, in addition to other areas across the country as well.

I'd suggest checking into local real estate and apartment rental prices (and tax rates) to assess what your needs might be relative to cost of living for the area, and take that into consideration before submitting your salary requirements.

OTOH, I know of three mid-sized to large companies with sites that are important to their overall bottom line, each paying in excess of $120K. In each of those jobs, the SEO/Search manager has great responsibility, handling one or more sites with 10K uniques/day, where uniques mean substantial revenue opportunity captured...or lost.

These jobs involve all aspects of SEO/SEM however, not just SEO.

I imagine that it depends greatly upon which industry, and how much revenue the site(s) in question account for.

Dear caveman, one of them is a travel group in Downtown Vancouver, with numerous travel websites to be promoted.

Any suggestions, please

Congrats Gudu

I presume you are from outside US so possibly green card goes with the job if so you need to take that into account

Suggest for current US resident salary about $120,000 if they are competitive industries and would make back your salary plus
if coming from outside of US would need to be slightly lower as starting $65,000 and as others have said prior to any figures you would need to find out where based and the cost of living etc.

Hi Guddu,

Vancouver is a great city - Olymics in 2010, that's why the travel industry is gearing up, perhaps. (I live about 25 miles outside).

Prices and rents are perhaps just slightly less than what Marcia quoted for LA but in Canadian $ (USD = 1.2 CD). Large E. Indian/PK population, E. Asian too. Entry should be more straightfoward than the US particularly if you have employment here.

I'm not familiar with salaries but the town is quite entrepreneurial and you'll be in the pre-tourist boom - demand should be high.

Good luck. Sticky me for info if you like.

Hmmm,

Did I answer a different thread or did you say one offer was from Vancouver? Seem to have lost that thread!
