Graphic vs Text Navigation

Will a graphic navigation kill me?

Taking over a site that was very graphics heavy. Have gotten them to change a lot of things but the navigation bar which is all graphics.

I'm getting text links in other areas and a site map, but is my navigation bar the key? Will this really hurt ranking with this opportunity of missing internal anchor text?

It used to be a tactic to use a blank table cell to get a top left navbar content to be below the main page content to push page content to the top.

I doubt you would loose too much by a gaphic menu but think a text one would be better.

Ranking is "competitive" so see what everyone else is doing whose sites are above yours.

Can you add text links at the foot of each page instead?

this depends entirely on your approach to SEO. many people use graphic nav in order to help the spiders see the actual page content first, then have footer text links for appropriate anchor text for internal linking.
