I've created many sites and dealt with their SEO. I now have [snip] finished and ready to go.

I'll probably start with DMOZ, and then do all the usual suspects: Google et al... I'm just interested on other Webmasters' views as to how they deal with SEO right from the start, with a brand new site.

Looking forward to your comments,

John.

I'd get linked into the right neighorhoods first, and then seek directory entries, and then seek references on high pr pages.

Do a search in Google for: [your key word] guest book. Go to those sites and make an entry in their guest books with a link to your site. This is an easy and quick way to get links to your site.

Thanks, jo1ene - that's a cool article, and very useful.

guitaristinus, the guestbook tip is one that all newbies should note. I do use it, and it works!

Thanks,

John.

Go to those sites and make an entry in their guest books with a link to your site.

Not exactly something that I would recommend. For one, that is referred to as Guestbook Spamming. Two, you are going to catch some flack from some of those Guestbook owners. Three, links from most Guestbooks have little value, if any, especially with Google.

The answer, page, is to use it with discretion. I know there's nothing more annoying than having to remove guestbook spammers, with their pesky links to all sorts of undesirable sites, from your Guestbook.

Ah-ha, but you didn't say that in your post. ;)

Discretion is the key when doing anything that may be construed as less than acceptable, dropping URIs in Guestbooks is one of those less than acceptable things. I'm sure there are times where leaving a valid message with your URI are appropriate. But most of the time, they are not.

;) guitaristinus brought this up, not me! LOL

OK, point taken. Use with lots of discretion - so discrete that you (almost) never use it. Right?

That's what I meant, but I didn't say it in my post.

I apologize. I was joshing. But, maybe it's good that it was brought up.

If you have sites already listed in the SEs, then you can link from them. What I do is find a page that has the keyword for the new site on it and link from that page. If the existing page is obscure enough I'd even throw the keyword on the page one or two times or maybe even in the title. Of course the keyword would be in the link to the new site. I have sites that I use just for this purpose.
