I am planning to register a domain name which will be related to my site. I have a questions before I register and i would really appreciate if you can help me.

So lets say my site is about bluewidgets and i thought about registering www.bluewidget411.com or blue-widget411.com?

Which would be better for search engine rankings for the keyword blue widget?

I am really confused and i would appreciate if anyone can give me an idea

Thanks a lot.

Sincerely..

I don't know if it would make any difference to the search engines. But, you should think about which URL would be more likely to be clicked on when appearing in the SERPs. Personally, I like the look of bluewidget-411. com or bluewidget411. com

You could also register a couple of variations, then try testing them using Adwords. Use whichever variation has the highest CTR.

If they are both available, I would recommend purchasing both domains and just 301 one to the other.

The last thing you would want is to have someone else buy it when you have built up your brand.

Hi blue_eagle

It really dosent matters about the format of the domain name

Try and keep your main targetted keyword in the domain name

This is surely gonna help you improve your search engine placement

www.bluewidget411.com or blue-widget411.com?

Which would be better for search engine rankings for the keyword blue widget?

neither.

The second will give you the keyword 'blue'... but the SEs will only be able to read the second half as 'widget411'.

bluewidget-411 likewise will give you the word 'bluewidget', but the SEs will be unable to split the words.

If you want to nail both keywords in the URL you'd have to look at blue-widget-411.

personally i like the idea of just buying both of them. Its not very expensive and can be better for you in the long run.

Afraid I have to disagree with you there.

google search: webmaster [google.com]

See how sites like webmasterworld.com have the word webmaster in boldface?

www.webmasterworld.com

Both Google and Yahoo show the keyword of your search boldfaced if it appears anywhere in the URL.

There are tons of examples of this - and this contradicts your statement.
