I am looking for legit ways to get some traffic (at this point I would be happy with even a couple of dozen hits a day!). It seems that the only way to get regular traffic is to improve your site ranking in the search engines. One of the ways to do this is to have your links on sites that have good rank. However, by paying to have your link on a high rank site just to boost your own rank could put your site at risk of de-listing from the search engines. So paid linking is ruled out for me.
Being a new site with little traffic, I can't see anyone(with a good rank) who would be willing to carry my site link for free. So that won't work either.
I am willing to budget a little money to promote my site through PPC advertising but I don't know if that will that help my ranking in the search results. (will it?)
There has to be some way to do this. Others are. I'm just missing something here. Please help! Any advise would be appreciated.
PS do these software that I see on the net that guarantee to boost traffic, work? Any experiences good or bad?

Alas, that is exactly what works. Search out the sites that relate best yours, and send a request. Add their link to your site. Building quality, relevant backlinks takes effort and patience.
